Blueprint Reading Part 1 - LWC-301 Commercial – Intermediate Electrical Series (44 hour course)  

Blueprint Reading Part 1 (LWC 301 Commercial): Electrical Work for Commercial Construction from the Ground Up, Part 1

Coordinate cut sheets, submittals, the NEC and more with blueprints to plan electrical installation for commercial construction.

LWC 301 and 302 take students through construction of a commercial building from underground work through construction and finish work. Students will use genuine construction plans (blueprints) and related documents to learn how to coordinate documents, work with other trades, and identify ways to save money through careful planning.

Key course subjects in LWC 301 include:

  • How to read construction plans (blueprints)
  • Coordinating construction documents:
    • Construction plans (blueprints)
    • Specifications
    • Submittals
    • Requests for Information (RFIs) and Change Orders
  • Identifying and planning for electrical work on construction plan sheet types:
    • Structural sheets and foundation plans
    • Mechanical sheets (includes motors review)
    • Plumbing sheets (includes fire protection)
    • Electrical sheets (including load calculations)
      • Fixture schedules
    • Architectural sheets
  • Energy efficiency standards – CA Title 24
  • Underground utilities locator and coordinating with local utility companies
  • Parallel conductors, sizing secondary conductors and conduits and sizing grounding electrode conductors
  • Working clearances, services and meter types
  • Exterior Lighting
  • Scheduling Labor and materials


A 2008 NEC book, a set of blueprints and a student resource booklet are required for this course.

The blueprints and the student resource booklet are included in the cost of the tuition. The blueprints and the student resource booklet are used for both the Blueprint Reading Part 1 and Part 2 (LWC 301 and 302) courses.

Blueprint Reading Part 2 (LWC 302 Commercial): Electrical Work for Commercial Construction from the Ground Up, Part 2

Coordinate cut sheets, submittals, the NEC and more with blueprints to plan electrical installation for commercial construction.

LWC 301 and 302 take students through construction of a commercial building from underground work through construction and finish work. Students will use genuine construction plans (blueprints) and related documents to learn how to coordinate documents, work with other trades, and identify ways to save money through careful planning.

Key course subjects in LWC 302 include:

  • Public utility requirements
  • Electrical room layout
  • Floor types and planning conduit runs
  • Parking garage lighting
  • Large conduit systems and parallel conductor ampacity
  • Busway systems
  • Commercial load calculations
  • Lighting fixtures and wiring methods
  • Branch circuits and raceways
  • Electrical for elevators and water heater
  • Electrical finish work

Blueprint Reading Part 3 (LWC 303 Commercial): Electrical Work for Commercial Tennant Improvements

Learn to plan tenant improvements for existing buildings by working through three sets of TI plans: a restaurant, a service station, and a retail pharmacy.

Key course subjects in LWC 303 include:

  • Restaurant TI plans:

    • Feeder conductor calculations, general lighting ground electrode systems

LWC-304 Commercial – Intermediate Electrical Series (42 hour course)

LWC-304 Commercial - Finishing the Job: Focus on Quality and Safety

LWC-304 Commercial is all the tricky stuff…that’s what this course covers. After you have completed tenant improvement installations, it’s time to complete the job by installing specialty systems and checking the quality of the job to assure customer satisfaction and safety. You will also learn up to date information on NFPA and OSHA requirements. Topics include:

  • NFPA 70E and Arc Flash
  • HVAC and environmental air controls
  • Introduction to motor controls
  • Fault finding and hot checks
  • Many other topics on finishing a job successfully


Using schematics, prints from actual projects, and lab materials, you can practice skills you will actually use on the job.


2008 NEC Code Book is required. You will need access to a high speed internet computer. You will complete a NFPA 70 E course and the OSHA 10 Construction course online as homework assignments. Students who complete the OSHA 10 assignment also receives an OSHA certificate in addition to a WECA course completion certificate.
