2 Day Exam Preparation Course for the California State General or Residential Certification Exam

2 Day Exam Preparation is a fast-paced code study course focused on learning to use the code book in preparing for the State Certification exam.

Much of the class is dedicated to sample testing similar to state exams. It focuses on practical research by the students to find the answers to code questions rather than instruction by lecture.

Prerequisites : 8,000+ General OJT hours and substantial knowledge of electrical theory and the 2008 National Electric Code (NEC) or 4,800+ Residential OJT hours and substantial knowledge of electrical theory and the 2008 National Electric Code (NEC)

VDV - Test Preparation Course (6.5 hour course) 

VDV (Voice Data Video) Test Preparation Course for the California State Voice Data Video Certification Exam

VDV Test Preparation is a 6.5 hour course focused on learning what you need to know to prepare for the VDV State Certification exam.

Categories of information include:

  • Installations, including wire pulling, terminations, control panels devices and finish work
  • Constructing and maintaining any system that falls within the scope of the National Electric Code, Articles 725, 770 (non-composite cables only), 800 (non-hybrid cables only), 810 and 820
    • Audiovisual systems
    • Sound systems
    • Security and access control systems
    • Telecommunications
  • Stockroom and material handling
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Safety
  • Preparation
  • Trade specify training related to Voice, Data, Video

Based on both knowledge of Code and experiential data, this fast paced course will get you up-to-date on critical VDV content.

Basic Motor Controls (32 hour course)

Introduction to Motor Controls

Motor Controls is an introduction to basic motor controls. Topics covered include:
    • The parts and components of a motor circuit
    • Manual control / automatic control / control logic
    • Motor control line - ladder diagrams
    • Control relays / timer relays
    • Reversing circuits


    This 32 hour course is loaded with labs and hands on practice activities.

    After completing this course students will be able:

    • To size the conductors and overcurrent protection of a basic motor circuit
    • To interpret a basic line ladder diagram
    • To install a magnetic motor starter with remote start stop station
    • To troubleshoot a basic magnetic motor starter circuit


    Students who complete the course successfully receive Certificates of Completion showing hours of attendance. This course is worth 32 hours of continuing education credit. The tuition for the course includes the cost of the Electrical Motor Controls for Integrated Systems textbook and lab materials.

                                                                                        Fire-Life Safety Exam Preparation is a fast-paced course in which students learn how to use the code books in preparation for, and during the State Certification exam.

                                                                                        Effective January 1, 2011, the certification exam will use the NEC 2008 code book and the NFPA 72 2007 code book.

                                                                                        Learn valuable skills including:
                                                                                        • Using code books to find information fast
                                                                                        • Creating a plan to study for and pass the exam
                                                                                        • Figuring out which code book you need to answer a question – fast

                                                                                        This course is focused on giving students hands-on practice in interpreting exam questions and finding the right answers in a quick and systematic way.


                                                                                        Prerequisites: Visit the DAS website prior to enrollment to see if you qualify to take the exam.

                                                                                        Standard Tuition Fee: This course is currently being offered at an introductory price of $295.
                                                                                        Late Tuition Fee: We are not enforcing a late enrollment fee for this course during this introductory period.

Many students for this course will find that they already own these texts from previous classroom or field work. Average cost of required texts is estimated to be $140.
