ABC MEETS WITH OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO DISCUSS CARD CHECK  (07/29/2009)
ABC and several other members of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) July 29 met with top officials with the Obama administration to discuss the negative impact the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), or “card check” legislation, would have on businesses and employees.

During the meeting, representatives from CDW told administration officials why there can be no open discussions about labor law reform as long as EFCA is on the table.  The group talked about the card check portion of the bill that removes a worker’s right to a secret ballot election when deciding whether to join a union and discussed reasons why the proposed compromises aren’t enough.  One reason they cited was the binding arbitration provision in which government appointed arbitrators could establish a two-year contract setting all work rules for a business without giving the company’s employees or owner the opportunity to approve or appeal the decision.

In conclusion, CDW pointed out that EFCA and its alternatives are bad for employees, employers and the economy and urged the administration to refrain from pushing Congress to pass the bill.
