ABC May 27 named four companies as Certified Green Contractors after they completed ABC’s Green Contractor Certification pilot program. The four companies are Flintco, Inc., of Tulsa, Okla.; C.E. Floyd Company, Inc., of Bedford, Mass. and Middletown, Conn.; Big D Construction, of Salt Lake City; and Balfour Beatty Construction’s Washington, D.C. location.
To achieve certification from ABC’s National Green Building Committee, each company submitted documentation showing its green efforts and underwent a third-party onsite assessment.
“The ABC Green Contractor Certification program demonstrates that our members are leaders in the construction community, establishing sustainable workplace environments – both on and off the jobsite,” said W. Brewster Earle, chairman of the ABC National Green Building Committee and president of Comfort Systems USA Energy Services, in Hartford, Conn.
Each company had to meet a list of 12 prerequisites ranging from distributing documents electronically to establishing an aggressive recycling program. In addition, companies were required to fulfill at least 12 out of 36 elective items that included conducting a professional energy audit, water conservation efforts and providing incentives for carpooling or using public transportation. Each company also achieved four education and training benchmarks, such as instructing employees on sustainability issues and requiring at least 25 percent of eligible managers to receive green building awareness education. The program will be open to all ABC members later this month.
