The majority of voters in 11 key congressional districts across the country oppose the current health care reform legislation being advocated by President Obama and Democratic leaders, according to a poll released March 10 by the StartOver! coalition, a group of 248 leading employer associations, including ABC, that are dedicated to passing meaningful health care reform.
Following the release of President Obama’s outline for health care reform, likely voters were surveyed by The Tarrance Group in congressional districts in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Nevada, New York, and Pennsylvania on March 7 and 8. Across all districts surveyed, 52.7 percent of respondents opposed the Democratic health care bill and 77 percent said they believed their taxes would go up if the current health care legislation were passed.
More than 58 percent of respondents opposed the use of budget reconciliation, a parliamentary procedure that would push the health care reform bill through Congress by limiting debate, and 69 percent said their representatives’ vote on health care will be an important consideration in how they vote in November.
In addition to its participation in the StartOver! coalition, ABC March 4 called on Congress to “wipe the slate clean” of current health care reform legislation and start focusing on issues that will control costs for its members.
“A bill of this magnitude that impacts so many of the nation’s construction contractors and their employees deserves full examination,” said Geoff Burr, ABC’s vice president of federal affairs. “Simply enrolling more Americans in a fatally flawed health care system with out-of-control costs does not constitute reform.”
